Advanced Moving & Storage Details Chicago Permit and Insurance Rules for Move-In Day

The Bensenville company says a $25 city permit and a building's insurance certificate decide whether a Chicago move starts on time.

BENSENVILLE, IL, UNITED STATES, October 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A moving crew can be loaded and parked outside a Chicago high-rise by 8 a.m. and still lose the morning to a ticketed truck or a freight elevator nobody reserved. Advanced Moving & Storage says the paperwork that prevents both is usually filed days before anyone picks up a box.

The family-owned company, which runs its headquarters and warehouse at 1159 N. Ellis St. in Bensenville, published guidance on two approvals that often determine whether a Chicago move starts on schedule: a city parking permit for the curb, and the building's own move-in requirements.

Some ward service offices, including the 49th and 44th, give residents complimentary no-parking signs for a move. The 49th Ward service office states that those signs are "not enforceable by ticket or towing," and that residents who hire a moving company should have the company obtain the enforceable version. Enforceable signs come from the Chicago Department of Transportation, cost $25 a day and are issued to eligible moving companies. The 44th Ward's office says signs must be posted at least 48 hours before the move, cover an eight-hour window of either 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and may reserve a space for only one day at a time. They must also go in legal parking spaces, not loading zones, tow zones, crosswalks or spots in front of hydrants.

"People find the free signs online, print nothing else, and assume the space is held," said Tyler Lalagos, an owner of Advanced Moving & Storage. "Then a neighbor parks there the night before and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The permitted sign is the one with teeth, and it has to go up two days out."

Buildings set the second condition. Some Chicago properties require a certificate of insurance naming the owner and the management company before a crew can use the freight elevator, and the limits are set by the building rather than the mover. Michigan Plaza, the office towers at 205 and 225 N. Michigan Ave., publishes a contractor and vendor policy that requires a combined single limit of at least $5 million, lists the owner, the lender and the managing agent as additional insureds, and asks that the dock and service elevator be reserved at least two weeks in advance. Work there is permitted on weekdays only after 5 p.m., or any time on weekends.

Residential buildings set their own insurance and scheduling rules, which is why the company tells customers to ask four questions as soon as a date is set:
• What insurance limits must the certificate show, and who has to be named on it?
• Which days and hours are moves allowed, and is the service elevator booked by the hour?
• Is there a loading dock, what is its height clearance, and how long may a truck stay in it?
• Does the building or the mover supply floor, wall and elevator protection?

"The answers take one phone call, and they change what we bring and when we show up," Lalagos said. "What we cannot fix is a certificate requested the day before. Insurance offices do not work that fast."

Advanced Moving & Storage runs local, long-distance and commercial work out of the Bensenville location, along with packing and warehouse storage for customers whose closing and move-in dates do not line up.
